In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Linda Hollinger-Smith has more than 28 years of experience in higher education including roles as a nurse scholar, educator, leader, and researcher. She served in a dual role as Assistant Dean for Academic Systems at Rush University College of Nursing, creating their first Adult Nurse Practitioner program, and Director of Nursing of the Rush Primary Care Institute with responsibilities for leading clinical nursing, education and research efforts supporting diverse communities. She then served as Vice President for Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging, focusing on enhancing the quality of gerontological nursing education and elder care. Most recently, she served as Associate Provost and Chief Research Officer for Chamberlain University, overseeing the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, Accreditation, and Research. Dr. Hollinger-Smith led research efforts to develop the Social Determinants of Learning framework which is being tested and adopted by other academic institutions. Most recently, she joined Walden University and will be teaching in the PhD in Nursing program.
Dr. Hollinger-Smith holds a PhD with a focus in Gerontology from the University of Illinois at the Medical Center in Chicago, along with a Certification in Gerontological Studies from the University of Illinois School of Public Health and both Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Nursing degrees from the University of Illinois at the Medical Center.
