In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Laura K. Harrawood received her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale in 2004. Dr. Harrawood began as a contributing faculty member at Walden in the School of Counseling in April of 2025. She has taught across the counseling curriculum. Dr. Harrawood has held several faculty positions at both ground and online programs. Her counseling experience includes mental health agencies, private practice, and college campus counseling centers. She has published and presented in the areas of group work, ethics, innovative teaching methods, the training of couple and family counselors, substance abuse and death education. She currently serves on the editorial review board for The Family Journal: Counseling and Therapy for Couples and Family and is a long-time member of the American Counseling Association, several of its divisions, and various state associations.
