In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. A native Baltimorean, Dr. Carter completed her bachelor's degree at Temple University (magna cum laude) and master's and doctoral degrees at Loyola University Maryland. She holds three professional licenses in the State of Maryland as a licensed psychologist (LP), licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC), and licensed clinical alcohol & drug counselor (LCADC) in Maryland.
Affectionately known as “DrL” by her patients and students, Dr. Carter is the owner and CEO of the Institute for HEALing, LLC (iHEAL), an award-winning mental health practice.
In addition to practicing, she serves as a contributing faculty member at Walden University in the Clinical Psychology PhD Program, teaching a variety of courses. Previously, she has served as the Director of Clinical Training at Capella University and Hazelden Betty Ford Graduate School of Addiction Studies and Director of Psychology Division at Loyola Clinical Centers.
DrL is a sought-after international speaker and presenter on topics related to anxiety and depression; anger/rage; trauma, sexual health, wellness, and violence; and cultural sensitivity in mental health professionals. Having experience speaking to general populations as well as professionals, she has been featured in a number of television, radio, and print media discussions, sharing her insight on important mental health topics and how they relate to current events and societal structures.
She has been featured guest discussing mental health topics in local and national media outlets like The Afro, Fox45, WBAL, New York Times, Washington Post, WJZ13, and Baltimore Sun.
DrL has authored three psychology textbooks, the last of which was Reflecting Humanity: Biological, Psychological, and Sociological Perspectives. She also regularly writes a column for Psychology Today called Inside Intimacy.
She serves as the Vice-President of the Board of Directors for the Black Mental Health Alliance, Inc. and board member for Pro Bono Counseling, Inc. In July 2024, she was appointed to Maryland State’s Board of Psychologists by Governor Wes Moore.
