In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Cannon is an experienced counselor educator with over 16 years of combined teaching, clinical, and academic leadership experience. Her formal area of teaching and scholarship is in counselor education and supervision, with subject matter expertise spanning counselor development, Relational-Cultural Theory, lifespan development, and the use of neurofeedback in mood disorder treatment.
Dr. Cannon currently serves as adjunct faculty at Walden University, where she supports graduate-level instruction in counseling and contributes to the academic development of emerging professionals in the field. Her research interests center on the integration of cultural context in counselor training, assessment practices in higher education, and innovative approaches to mental health interventions.
Clinically, Dr. Cannon has worked extensively with adolescents and women, focusing on trauma-informed care, mood disorders, and identity development. She is an active presenter at state and national counseling conferences and has published in peer-reviewed journals and edited texts. Notably, she is the author of Lifespan Development: Cultural and Contextual Applications for the Helping Professions (2022), which reflects her commitment to culturally responsive education and practice.
In addition to her scholarly contributions, Dr. Cannon serves on the editorial board of the Journal for Creativity in Mental Health and maintains active affiliations within the professional counseling community. Her approach is grounded in both academic rigor and a personal commitment to equity, growth, and compassion.
