In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Joy Carpenter Hicks is a contributing faculty member at Walden University and the Director of Transformation for one of the leading healthcare organizations in the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex. With more than 20 years of experience spanning frontline support, nursing, and executive administration, she brings a uniquely comprehensive understanding of the healthcare landscape to every initiative she leads.
Dr. Hicks holds a Doctorate in Healthcare Administration from Oklahoma State University, along with both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Healthcare Management. Her career is distinguished by her leadership in large-scale innovation and digital transformation across two of DFW’s major healthcare systems. She played a pivotal role in guiding COVID-19 transformation strategy, educating physicians and clinical team members, advancing virtual care models, all while shaping organizational readiness during a critical time in healthcare delivery.
A recognized leader in remote care innovation, Dr. Hicks successfully developed and scaled a robust Remote Patient Monitoring (RPM) program consisting of more than 60 unique use-case pathways—one of the most comprehensive in the region. She has also led the design and deployment of enterprise telemedicine strategies and quality-centered digital health programs that improve patient experiences, enhance clinical outcomes, and expand access to care.
Driven by a deep passion for the intersection of technology and healthcare, Dr. Hicks believes that thoughtful innovation has the power to transform communities and reduce disparities in care. Her diverse background—from bedside to boardroom—guides her purposeful, people-centered approach to leadership and decision-making.
In both academia and industry, Dr. Hicks remains committed to developing the next generation of healthcare professionals and advancing solutions that strengthen the systems that serve us all.
