In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Joi Griffin Showell, MSW, Ph.D., LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and esteemed faculty member in the Department of Social Work at Delaware State University. She brings a wealth of academic leadership and clinical expertise to her role, having previously served as Associate Professor and MSW Program Director at the Whitney M. Young Jr. School of Social Work at Clark Atlanta University. Dr. Showell’s professional practice spans several years in the areas of medical social work, trauma-informed care, mental health, incarceration and reentry, and social work administration. Her deep commitment to the profession is evident in her contributions to national initiatives and organizations. She is an accreditation site visitor for the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and served on the CSWE national task force that developed the Specialized Practice Curricular Guide for Trauma-Informed Social Work Practice. She served a member of the Association of Social Work Boards Practice Analysis Task Force and Standards Setting Task Force. She is an active member of several professional organizations including the Council on Social Work Education, the American Association of Blacks in Higher Education, and the Black Doctoral Network. She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Clinical Social Work Association. Outside of her professional work, Dr. Showell enjoys reading and cherishing time with her four adult children, grandsons, and her beloved Maltipoo.
