In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. John C. Chick brings over fifteen years of professional experience in technical training and adult education, combined with extensive expertise in educational leadership and research methodology. He earned his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, Master of Business Administration in Human Resource Management, and Master of Science in Education from the University of Bridgeport, as well as a Master of Professional Studies in Design Management from the University of Bridgeport and a Bachelor of Arts in American Studies from the University of Connecticut. His professional career includes roles as Technical Learning and Development Program Manager at the New York Power Authority, Educational Specialist at Yale University, and Technical Trainer with FuelCell Energy and the United States Navy. At Walden University, Dr. Chick contributes his expertise in educational leadership, adult learning, and research methodology to support doctoral students and advance scholarship in higher education. He is the author of The AI Learning Curve: What Every Educator Needs to Know (2025) and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals including Education Sciences, Informatics, and the Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development. Dr. Chick serves as Director of the Commission for Adult Basic Education and Literacy under the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education and as Associate Editor for the Journal of Military Learning. His major accomplishments include mentoring over twenty-five doctoral candidates through dissertation completion, and receiving the Imogene Okes Award for Outstanding Research in Adult Learning (2025).
