Dr. James F. Whittenberg has been an educator and school counselor for over 28 years. Since 2010, he has been a licensed professional counselor in private practice. He is also a board-approved supervisor, with over 80 former supervisees now fully licensed in Texas. In 2014, he accepted a dual faculty appointment with UT-Brownsville and UTRGV, where he is now an associate professor of counseling. He began his role as contributing faculty with Walden University in 2022.


Dr. Whittenberg received a B.S. in Education from Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville, a M.Ed. in Counseling and Guidance from the University of Texas at Brownsville, and a Ph.D. in Counseling Studies from Capella University in Minneapolis. After 12 years in public schools, he shifted his career to counselor education, supervision, research, and practice. Dr. Whittenberg has since worked with students from pre-kindergarten through twelfth grade, as well as adult clients from a broad range of backgrounds and clinical issues.
