Elizabeth Matthews holds a PhD in Psychology and in addition to university teaching, has authored multiple peer reviewed publications on the topics of early childhood education, the role of the environment in teaching and learning, and the importance of place attachment. She co-edited "Creating Dynamic Spaces for Learning" which was published by Springer in 2021 and has a forthcoming manuscript to be published by Ethics Press in 2027, with the working title "The Psychology of Place: Reimagining Contemporary Learning Environments". ​
