Dr. Demetria K. Burleson earned her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Walden University, her M.Ed. in School Counseling from Lamar University, and her B.A. in Music Education from Langston University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas (LPC #84361) and a National Certified Counselor (#1723355), with additional Texas certifications in School Counseling EC–12 and Music Education EC–12.

At Walden University, Dr. Burleson serves as an Instructor of School of Counseling, where she teaches and mentors future counselors. She brings over a decade of combined experience in higher education, school counseling, private practice, and K–12 education. Before becoming a school counselor, she taught general music and choir, directing award-winning programs and fostering creativity and confidence in her students. She is dedicated to supporting students’ growth—academically, personally, and professionally.

Her research centers on professional identity development among Black women in Counselor Education and Supervision programs at Predominantly White Institutions, with a focus on resilience, wellness, and DEIBA (diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and access). She is deeply committed to mentorship and advancing equity in the counseling profession, serving as a social change agent who empowers future counselors to lead with authenticity and advocacy.

Dr. Burleson is an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity for Women, where she values scholarship, service, sisterhood, social action, and the arts, with music as a call and lifelong passion.
