In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. DeMetra S. Bates, Ph.D., LMSW, M.Ed., is a social work educator, practitioner, and community-engaged scholar with over 15 years of professional experience in social work, higher education, and community development. She currently serves as an adjunct faculty member at Walden University, where she facilitates online learning, supports student engagement, and promotes critical thinking grounded in real-world practice.
Dr. Bates’s formal training includes a Ph.D. in Urban and Regional Planning with a concentration in Community Development and Housing, a Master of Social Work, and a Master of Education in Higher Education. Her teaching areas include social work practice, human behavior, community practice, and interdisciplinary studies, with a strong emphasis on culturally responsive and student-centered learning.
Her primary research interests focus on homelessness, housing stability, community development, and health disparities among underserved populations. She is particularly committed to exploring sustainable, community-based solutions that promote equity and improve quality of life.
Professionally, Dr. Bates has extensive experience across clinical, academic, and nonprofit settings, including roles in behavioral health, correctional mental health, housing services, and grant-funded programs. She has also served in leadership roles supporting program development, student mentorship, and community outreach initiatives. She is affiliated with professional organizations such as the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and actively contributes to community-based initiatives through her nonprofit, Cultivating Uplift & Progress (C.U.P.).
Among her notable accomplishments, Dr. Bates has led and supported housing initiatives, mentored undergraduate and graduate students, presented at professional conferences, and developed programs addressing homelessness and community needs. Her work reflects a commitment to service, scholarship, and the advancement of social justice.
