In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Cherieda Washington is an accomplished educator with a rich background in both secondary and higher education. With a deep commitment to fostering exceptional student success, Dr. Washington excels in guiding students through the counseling and educational gatekeeping processes, providing ongoing interventions to support their academic growth and empowerment. Her strong skills in communication, planning, organization, collaboration, and leadership have allowed her to make a meaningful impact in the lives of scholars.
Dr. Washington holds a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from Walden University, where she completed her dissertation titled "It Takes a Village: Stories of Black Grandparents Raising Grandchildren." She also earned a Master of Science in Marriage & Family Counseling from Mississippi College and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology & Social Work from Tougaloo College. Her academic achievements are complemented by her active involvement in several professional organizations, including Tapestry-CES, the Golden Key International Honour Society, the National Society of Leadership and Success, and Chi Sigma Iota, where she was recognized as the Spring 2023 Social Change Scholarship Winner.
