In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Cherieda Washington is a licensed professional and national certified counselor with a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision. She has extensive clinical experience across the lifespan, specializing in the evaluation and treatment of children, adolescents, and individuals throughout adulthood, as well as family and couples counseling. Clinically, Dr. Washington provides care for anxiety disorders, mood disorders, adjustment-related stress, identity and developmental concerns, multicultural concerns, and relational or family system challenges. Her therapeutic approach is evidence-based and culturally responsive interventions informed by CBT, multicultural, Gestalt, existential, client-centered, strategic family, structural family, and Bowen family systems perspectives. Dr. Washington is skilled in assessment, interdisciplinary collaboration, treatment planning, and delivering care in school-based, community, and outpatient settings.
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Washington is actively involved in counselor education at the graduate level. She teaches courses in multicultural counseling, marriage and family counseling, advanced family and couples counseling, child and adolescent counseling, grief and crisis counseling, theories of counseling, substance use disorders, career counseling, lifespan development, and field experience training courses such as practicum and internship. Dr. Washington has contributed to the scholarly community as an editorial reviewer and author, including an article featured in the Association for Child & Adolescent Counseling newsletter and reviewer work for an upcoming academic text on culturally sustainable counseling curricula. She has also presented her research publicly and served as a panelist and invited speaker at mental health events, academic banquets, school districts, and community organizations. Through these combined clinical, instructional, and scholarly roles, Dr. Washington remains committed to client-centered treatment, integrated care within multidisciplinary teams, and advancing the field through training, education, research, and advocacy.
