In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Amy Mooney is a licensed mental health counselor, counselor educator, and clinical supervisor with more than two decades of experience in the counseling profession. She earned her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision in 2005 and has taught in higher education since 2008, serving as core faculty, program chair, and clinical supervisor across CACREP-accredited programs.
Clinically, Dr. Mooney is the founder of Ames & Des Moines Therapy & Consulting, where she provides counseling, supervision, and independent medical and mental health evaluations. She specializes in complex cases, workers’ compensation, and integration of evidence-based interventions. She has also developed innovative services that bridge clinical care, organizational needs, and mental health evaluation practices.
Her service contributions are extensive. Dr. Mooney has served as the President of ACA of Iowa, Midwest Region Chair for the American Counseling Association, Commissioner for the Counseling Compact, National Compact Compliance Committee and Vice-Chair of Iowa’s licensure board, where she has been deeply engaged in regulatory restructuring and professional advocacy. She has also led numerous leadership development initiatives, including mentoring new counseling leaders, coordinating regional symposia, and presenting nationally on professional identity, leadership, and counselor development.
Dr. Mooney is a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and Approved Clinical Supervisor (ACS). She remains committed to advancing counselor education, mentoring emerging professionals, and supporting the growth of the counseling profession through teaching, advocacy, and clinical leadership.
