In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Dr. Aimee Kirkendol, DNP, FNP-BC is a Family Nurse Practitioner and Clinical Educator who has lived in Oregon for the past 14 years. Originally from Tennessee, she earned her undergraduate nursing degree from the University of Tennessee and later completed both her Master of Science in Nursing and Doctor of Nursing Practice degrees at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr. Kirkendol’s nursing career spans more than 30 years and began as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She advanced her education step by step, beginning with an Associate Degree in Nursing and ultimately earning her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree in 2011.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kirkendol has worked in a variety of clinical and educational settings, including medical-surgical nursing, home health and hospice, ambulatory care, orthopedic surgery, and nursing education in both campus-based and online environments. She has also served as a Clinical Educator and currently practices in telemedicine with a focus on health and wellness, including hormone replacement therapy, obesity management, and fitness and nutrition counseling.
With more than 20 years of experience in nursing education, Dr. Kirkendol is passionate about supporting the development of future nurses and nurse practitioners. She believes it is both a privilege and a responsibility to provide high-quality education while helping students build the clinical reasoning, confidence, and professional commitment necessary to deliver compassionate and effective patient care.
