Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

Earning a doctoral degree represents one of the highest achievements in academic and professional education. At Walden University, doctoral candidates pursuing professional practice degrees have the opportunity to complete a capstone project. A capstone project is a practical, solutions-focused alternative to a traditional dissertation. It’s a culminating experience that allows doctoral candidates to apply their advanced knowledge to real-world challenges in their fields.
This article explores:
A dissertation is a traditional academic research project. PhD candidates conducting dissertations aim to answer previously unexplored academic questions. Dissertations focus on data analysis and original research. The goal is to generate new theoretical knowledge and contribute to scholarly literature.
A capstone project, by contrast, is a practice-based scholarly project. Sometimes called a doctoral study or a consulting capstone, capstone projects emphasize practical application and problem-solving within professional contexts. Capstones are designed to address real organizational, professional, or community problems using applied research, evaluation, and evidence-based solutions. While capstones are still rigorous and research-driven, they emphasize practical impact, implementation, and professional application.
Walden University offers capstone projects in their professional doctoral programs. The following list includes the doctoral degree programs at Walden that offer a capstone project to fulfill graduation requirements, along with a brief description of each capstone.
Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
Doctor of Information Technology (DIT)
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in Behavioral Health Leadership
Doctor of Public Health (DrPH)
Doctor of Public Administration (DPA)
Doctor of Public Safety and Leadership
The goal of a capstone project is to demonstrate doctoral-level scholarship while also creating work that has immediate professional value. While capstone requirements vary by doctoral degree program, most Walden capstone projects follow these steps:

To help you develop academic skills that support successful doctoral work, the Office of Academic Support and Instructional Services (OASIS) offers workshops, tutorials, and tutoring in areas such as academic writing, research skills, critical thinking, and statistics. All of these resources are especially valuable as you prepare and complete your capstone project. In addition, the Walden Library is online and available every day of the year to give you anytime access to millions of journal articles, e-books, dissertations, and other scholarly materials to support your research and writing.
Together, these support services reflect Walden’s commitment to helping doctoral students succeed by offering structured assistance, academic skill development, and research guidance tailored to the demanding requirements of doctoral capstone projects.
