Micro-Credentials FAQ
A micro-credential is a short, focused learning and skill development experience with verifiable documentation of achievement, like a certificate. At Walden, a micro-credential is embedded into a credit-bearing course, enabling you to complete the micro-credential as part of your regular studies.
Micro-credentials can be a great way to develop knowledge and skills quickly and cost-effectively, particularly when embedded in a degree program. Since Walden micro-credentials are offered as part of elective or concentration courses, you can satisfy your elective requirements or work toward a concentration while also earning a micro-credential that has value in the workplace.
There is increasing evidence that employers value micro-credentials, especially as part of degree programs. For example, a July 2024 survey by the Northeastern University Center for the Future of Higher Education and Talent Strategy showed that hiring managers were more likely to hire candidates holding both a bachelor's degree and a micro-credential over those with only a degree. Having a micro-credential demonstrates your initiative and documents your skills in a way employers recognize.
A micro-credential is typically equivalent to a short course, workshop, or professional certificate. Micro-credentials normally require around 20 to 40 hours of online work, occasionally more. In a Walden course, that work is spread out across the term and represents part of the normal workload for the course.
Walden courses with an embedded micro-credential are taught by qualified Walden faculty who are ready to support your learning from start to finish. These courses include direct access to the micro-credential content as well as opportunities to discuss the content with fellow students and share ideas for how to apply the content in your workplace or daily life. Many courses include a project that lets you practice with the skills and knowledge you are acquiring.
No. Your course requirements will not include earning any micro-credential, though you may be asked to review all of the micro-credential content and attempt an exam. Passing an external certification exam will not be required in order to pass your course.
Depending on the micro-credential earned, you may receive a digital certificate, badge, professional continuing education hours, certification, or other documentation of your achievement.
Depending on the documentation you receive upon earning a micro-credential, you can list it on your résumé, post it to an online social or professional profile, add it to a digital badge wallet, or share it on social media.
The instructor of your course is prepared to help you with all course content and learning activities, including micro-credential content.
