Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

Avon Cornelius, ’18 DBA, represents the powerful intersection of military service, strategic communications expertise, and lifelong learning. With 20 years of military service and more than 12 years in marketing, advertising, and public relations, his role as a strategic communications analyst at Booz Allen Hamilton demonstrates how a Walden education enables veterans to translate military leadership into civilian sector impact.
Q: How has your Walden education equipped you to translate military communication principles into strategic messaging in your role at Booz Allen?
A: My Walden education has been instrumental in helping me translate tactical military communication to strategic-level messaging. Throughout my military service, I developed operational communication skills requiring clarity, precision and mission alignment. Walden’s DBA curriculum expanded that foundation by emphasizing critical thinking, qualitative and quantitative analysis, and evidence-based strategy. I learned to translate complex operational concepts into compelling, actionable insights that resonate across audiences and support long-term objectives.
Q: How do you balance creative storytelling with the precision and security requirements of strategic military communications?
A: Balancing creative storytelling with the precision and security demands of strategic military communications requires a disciplined fusion of art and science. My marketing and advertising background taught me how to craft narratives that resonate emotionally and culturally. But in military contexts, storytelling must align with operational goals, classified boundaries and geopolitical sensitivities.
My doctoral education gave me a research-driven mindset, an analytical framework for understanding complex systems and a deep respect for ethical communication. With this foundation, I approach every message through two lenses: one that seeks to inspire and connect, and another that rigorously evaluates risk, clarity and strategic impact. I treat communications projects like high-stakes campaigns where every word must be intentional, every image vetted and every channel secure. Creativity doesn't disappear — it's channeled through a more structured, mission-critical filter. My academic training ensures this balance isn't just intuitive; it's methodical, repeatable and accountable.
