Dr. Sonya Cook, DNP, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC is a dual ANCC-certified Family Nurse Practitioner and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner with broad clinical, academic, and leadership experience. Her clinical background includes practice with rural and underserved populations, women’s health, military medicine, employee health, gastroenterology, and geriatric populations as a Family Nurse Practitioner. As a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, she currently works in the forensic setting, providing specialized mental health care.
Dr. Cook has a longstanding commitment to nursing education. She began her academic career as a Practical Nursing (PN) instructor and later taught pathophysiology at another institution of higher education. Since 2014, she has served as both a clinical and didactic instructor in the MSN–Family Nurse Practitioner program at Walden University. After a brief hiatus, she returned to Walden University to teach in the MSN–Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program.
Her doctoral scholarship focused on sleep medicine, culminating in the development of clinical decision support software designed to assist primary care providers in the identification and treatment of sleep disorders within the primary care setting. In addition to teaching, Dr. Cook has served as a mentor to advanced practice nurses, supporting professional development, clinical excellence, and role transition across practice settings.
