In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.

In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Shayla Mulligan serves as a Contributing Faculty member in the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program within the College of Nursing at Walden University. She brings extensive clinical and leadership experience to her teaching, with a strong background in healthcare delivery and psychiatric care.
Prior to this role, Mulligan served as a Nursing Instructor at Seward County Community College from August 2016 to May 2022. During her tenure, she provided clinical and classroom instruction as the lead instructor for mental health and client care courses, developed high-fidelity clinical simulation scenarios, and collaborated on a comprehensive curriculum redesign.
Actively working as a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, Mulligan provides mental health assessment, diagnosis, and medication management at an outpatient private practice. Her clinical leadership background also includes implementing and directing a Serious Mental Illness Health Home program, as well as serving as a Director of Nursing overseeing a long-term care setting.
An alumna of the University of Kansas, her clinical interests include addressing health disparities in rural areas. She has been recognized for her contributions to the field, receiving a project award from the Midwest Nursing Research Society for her focus on the health of diverse populations and being named an American Psychiatric Nurses Association Board of Directors Scholar. Her major accomplishments also feature her ongoing collaborative work on an Advanced Nursing Education Workforce grant through the University of Kansas Medical Center, reflecting her continued dedication to healthcare education and community development.
