Dr. Sandra D. Mahoney attended Texas Tech University and received a master’s degree in rehabilitation psychology and a doctorate in counseling psychology with a minor in clinical. She worked with children, families, and adults at the Wichita Guidance Center, a family guidance center. There she conducted psychological evaluations for schools and courts and saw children and adults for therapy. She and her husband later started a private clinical practice in Wichita, KS. She worked with children who were suffering because their parents were divorcing and started a county-wide program to educate parents about the effects of divorce and how to minimize negative effects on children. In private practice she continued to see children and adults.
Together she and her husband relocated to Phoenix in 1990 where she continued seeing clients for a few years. She also began working for the Social Security Disability Administration reviewing claims for psychological disabilities. She has taught a variety of classes for doctoral students for Walden University since 1996, then some for master’s level students as well. She has served on many doctoral student dissertation committees and continues to do so.
She characterizes herself as a clinician at heart, having studied sociology and psychology because of her interest in how people can maximize their potential and overcome trauma and experiences which have led to habits which are holding them back from being happy and successful in their lives.
