Dr Michele Shipp holds a medical degree with training in Preventive and Community Medicine; she received a a master’s degree in public health (MPH) focusing on tropical diseases from Harvard University (1981) and a doctoral degree in public health (DrPH) with emphasis in international health from The University of Alabama at Birmingham (1991).

Dr. Shipp’s focus is on the study of major factors associated with social and racial/ethnic disparities in health and the development of effective community-based interventions to help reduce those disparities. Dr. Shipp interests also involve global health issues, specifically infectious diseases and women’s health issues around the world.

From 1997 through 2008, Dr. Shipp was actively involved in research and teaching activities, first at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, then at the Ohio State University. As a principal investigator, Dr. Shipp has conducted research on health disparities, cancer prevention behavior, and health promotion in diverse communities. Dr. Shipp served as an instructor, co-instructor and guest speaker to graduate level classes on health disparities, African American health, health promotion, community health and global health. She has published articles in peer-reviewed journals and presented at both local and national venues on these topics. From 2008 to 2011, she served as Assistant Director at the Ohio Department of Health where she oversaw the State Epidemiology Office as well as it three largest divisions (Prevention, Family & Community Health, Quality Assurance); she was actively involved in the formulation and evaluation of public health policies and managed the implementation of public health programs across the state of Ohio.

At Walden University, Dr. Michele Shipp has served as a Contributing Faculty in the Master of Public Health Program since 2011.
