M'Lynda Owens

M’Lynda Owens PhD, RN-BC has been a Contributing Faculty member in the Walden University Graduate School of Nursing since 2012. Dr. Owens earned her bachelor’s and doctorate in nursing degrees at the University of Texas and a master’s degree in health care administration from Trinity University. She has been a registered nurse since 1990 and engaged at the intersection of nursing and technology since 1997, when she computerized the nursing care plans for her unit. Dr. Owens is board certified in Informatics Nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). She is credentialed by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) as a certified health data analyst (CHDA) and a certified health technology specialist—clinician/practitioner (CHTS-CP). Dr. Owens’ subject matter expertise is in federal and state healthcare policy, Medicaid policy, Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act system implementations, fraud and abuse detection and analysis, healthcare data transmission standards, and business analysis. She currently is employed full time as a consultant for state Medicaid clients. Dr. Owens is active in several industry organizations and workgroups, including AHIMA, the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP), Health Level Seven International (HL7), the Committee on Operating Rules for Information Exchange CAQH CORE®, the American Nurses Association, and the National League for Nursing.
