Dr. Justin R. White is a board certified family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and a licensed clinical social worker. He is licensed to practice in New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, Minnesota, Virginia, Alabama, Illinois and California.
His background in mental health spans nearly 15 years. He first earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology (New Mexico State University) and a master’s degree in social work with a concentration in clinical practice (New Mexico Highlands University). He spent several years providing individual, family and group psychotherapy to at-risk children and adolescents in treatment foster care programs and other out of home placements as well as patients who were hospitalized in acute psychiatric facilities.
He then pursued a bachelor’s degree in nursing (University of New Mexico) and a master’s degree as a family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner at The University of Utah in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was selected as a Hartford Foundation Scholar during his time in Utah and pursued a graduate certificate in gerontology. He went on to earn a nursing practice doctorate at The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. His doctoral work focused on integration of psychiatric care in primary care settings for the geriatric population.
His clinical practice has included providing comprehensive psychiatric care focusing on psychopharmacology in a variety of settings. He has served as the Director of Psychiatry for the State of New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department (CYFD) providing psychiatric care and oversight to Juvenile Justice Services and Child Protective Services. He continues to provide consultation on complex cases for children involved with protective services to ensure safe and evidence based psychiatric care. He also continues to provide inpatient psychiatry attending services on an acute inpatient psychiatric unit in a local hospital treating severely mentally ill patients additionally leading the consultation liaison team of interdisciplinary clinicians focused on treating patients with medical and psychiatric co-morbidities. He also provides psychiatry services to adolescent forensic and residential treatment facilities in New Mexico.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. White maintains graduate faculty appointments and is actively involved in teaching graduate nurse practitioner students and facilitating doctoral student work. He co-developed a combined family nurse practitioner / psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program, assuming responsibility for development and delivery of all courses in a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner program. He served as the concentration coordinator for a PMHNP program for several years while also serving on (and chairing) multiple college and university committees.
He has several peer reviewed publications focusing on issues in family practice, psychiatry and substance use disorders. He is routinely sought out to present at state, national and international conferences on topics related psychiatry, often presenting lectures on treating children and adolescents with complex, developmental trauma histories. He has a long history of providing expert testimony in courts and has been admitted as an expert on issues related to psychiatry and mental health. Dr. White has been featured on local news segments focused on educating the community on prevalent mental health issues. White has been the recipient of numerous professional awards and is actively engaged with multiple professional organizations.
In his spare time, he enjoys traveling with his wife (who is a clinical social worker and nurse) and three young children (all under the age of 10), reading and real estate. He is an avid yoga practitioner and enjoys practicing mindfulness techniques.
