Dr. Janet McMillan is a nurse educator in the School of Nursing. She draws her experience from her extensive nursing career, which began in 1982. She has been a nurse educator for most of her career, beginning in 1985. Dr. McMillan has taught students at all levels of nursing including the Associate Degree, Baccalaureate, Master's and Doctoral levels. She has taught a variety of nursing focus areas such as medical-surgical nursing, pediatric nursing, psychiatric nursing, research, pharmacology, and pathophysiology. Although Dr. McMillan has worked in the inpatient acute care setting early in her career, beginning in 2000, Dr. McMillan began working in the home health and hospice fields providing care to mentally ill patients, hospice patients, and education to staff in these areas.

Dr. McMillan has been an invited speaker at conferences at the local, state, and national levels as well as having several publications in peer-reviewed journals and books. She has consulted on legal issues and with schools of nursing in program development and moving programs online. Her experience with medical-surgical and mental health patients has been with individuals across the life span and has proven to be helpful in helping others deal with stressful situations, including end-of-life issues. Dr. McMillan has been Board Certified as a Family Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner through the American Nurses Credentialing Center since 2008 and has held certification as an Advanced Hospice and Palliative Care Nurse through the Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses Association since 2016. Dr. McMillan is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, the Mississippi Nurses Association, the Hospice and Palliative Care Nurses Association, and the American Psychiatric Nurses Association.
