Dr. Lopez Avila received her Ph.D. in developmental psychology from the psychology department at Florida International University (FIU), in 2004. Dr. Lopez Avila also holds a license in mental health counseling in the state of Florida. During her graduate work, Dr. Lopez Avila received training in cognitive behavioral interventions for anxiety disorders in children. Dr. Lopez Avila was also awarded a diversity supplement from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to complete her dissertation on the link between anxiety and depression disorders and substance use. After graduating from FIU, Dr. Lopez Avila was an assistant professor in the department of psychiatry at the Center for Family Studies located at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine through 2009. Dr. Lopez Avila was awarded a second minority supplement from NIH to examine factors associated with substance use in Hispanic adolescents. Following the position at the University of Miami, Dr. Lopez Avila has help positions at Walden University, Barry University, and Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Lopez Avila has over 20 publications in peer reviewed journals.
