Asoka. N. S. Jayasena obtained her PhD from the University of Monash, Australia. She also has two Master’s degrees, from Teacher’s College, Columbia University ( 1979) and from the University of Colombo ( 1977). In addition she has a Post Graduate Diploma in Education. Her first degree was in social sciences.
Dr. Jayasena’s career started in 1961 as a high school teacher and from 1973 she got directly involved in teacher education with her appointment as a teacher educator. She joined the University of Peradeniya in 1979 as a lecturer and was the Head of the Department of Education and senior professor. At the university she taught many courses at different levels in Educational Sociology, Comparative Education, ethnographic research and gender. In addition she has taught psychology and methodology courses in other faculties and was involved with staff development activities in the University of Peradeniya. She has undertaken many research projects specifically related to education, gender, mental health and social issues. Since her retirement in 2003 from the University of Peradeniya, she has worked as a consultant to the refugee education project in Pakistan funded by the German government and has worked continuously with CENWOR (Center for Womens’ Research) in Sri Lanka and many other international NGOs like Save the Children, Plan International, BEFARE which focus more on education, women and children’s issues. She has conducted many projects related to education and mental health since the Tsunami mishap in Sri Lanka and has been working as an active member in restoring the education in Sri Lanka. She has worked as a research committee member for several years (2011 to date) and taught several courses on qualitative research methodology at Walden. She is a visiting professor and examiner to Peradeniya and many other tertiary level institutions. In 2007 she joined the Walden University as a faculty member. In 2009 Sri Lankan Government selected her as the National Team leader and the Deputy Head of the team in modernization of secondary education project in Sri Lanka. She has many publications in both Sinhala and English languages.
