Alftan Dyson, PharmD, BCACP, AAHIVP, is the Director of Pharmacy Services with Medical Advocacy and Outreach (formerly Medical AIDS Outreach of Alabama) located in Montgomery, AL. In this role, she oversees all pharmacy services available to patients, including the 340B drug program. Additionally, she manages pharmacy operations for MAO’s in-house pharmacy, Copeland Care Pharmacy. She previously worked as a Registered Store Manager with Walgreens Local Specialty Pharmacy in Montgomery, AL prior to joining MAO to open Copeland Care Pharmacy. Dr. Dyson received a Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2008 from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (Chattanooga, TN), and then traveled to Memphis, TN, where she completed her Doctor of Pharmacy in 2013 from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. In June 2014, she completed a community pharmacy residency with the University of Missouri- Kansas City (UMKC) College of Pharmacy where her practice site was a Walgreens Local Specialty Pharmacy located on the campus of Truman Medical Center-Hospital Hill. During this time, Dr. Dyson also received specialized HIV/AIDS training at the Kansas City Care Clinic and was selected to participate in the Midwest AIDS Education and Training Center (MAETC) Scholars Program. She completed the program in September of 2014 and attributes her passion for the work AETCs do throughout the country to her participation as a MATEC scholar. Dr. Dyson continues to be activiely involved with AETCs and presents often for the Southeast AETC on behalf of the Alabama division for regional webinars and conferences. An active member of the National Pharmaceutical Association (NPhA), Dr. Dyson serves as the national Zone II Director for the organization. She provides yearly HIV/AIDS updates to pharmacist members of NPhA during the annual convention. Dr. Dyson’s major areas of interest include the treatment of diabetes, hypertension, Hepatitis C, specifically in PLWH and HIV/AIDS treatment. She is equally passionate about increasing knowledge about and the uptake of HIV prevention strategies. Dr. Dyson serves as a preceptor to student pharmacists for the McWhorter School of Pharmacy at Samford University and the Harrison School of Pharmacy at Auburn University.
