FAQ About Walden’s Online MS in Data Science

What is data science?

Data science is the process of extracting insights from data. Using computer algorithms along with their own analytical skills, data scientists look for previously unrecognized connections between data points and use those connections to help improve efficiencies, target consumers, develop new products, and/or augment business strategies. It’s a field made possible by a connected, computerized world—and it’s a field that’s growing.

What skills can be gained through earning a master’s in data science?

Earning an MS in Data Science degree from Walden can help you gain valuable knowledge and skills in your field. Some of the most crucial skill sets include:

Communication: Individuals need to know how to communicate their key findings with stakeholders to ensure their work is effective. Refining their communication style helps data scientists formulate what business insights are most important and how they can use data to create a unique snapshot of their customers.

Collaboration: Data scientists bring significant value to organizations, but they must collaborate effectively with other departments to be successful. Involving stakeholders in a variety of departments gives data scientists a well-rounded view of the organization.

Predictive Analytics: Organizations use predictive analytics in many different ways, including data mining and artificial intelligence algorithms to update and optimize business decisions. A data scientist can offer insights with predictive analytics to make informed and educated decisions to benefit the organization.

Problem-Solving: A key skill in driving important business decisions is the ability to view a challenge from many perspectives. This approach allows data scientists to understand the issue they’re trying to resolve and use their skills and tools to address and drive good business decisions.

Why should you earn your master’s in data science online?

If you are interested in pursuing a degree in this expanding and important field, you should consider enrolling in an online master’s program. An online MS in Data Science program can give you the knowledge and skills you need to help organizations understand and harness big data. Plus, if you choose an online university like Walden, you can earn an MS in Data Science and learn from a curriculum that features real-world case studies and hands-on exercises—all from wherever you have internet access.

Do you need to understand programming to pursue a master’s in data science?

Programming is crucial to the field of data science, so it is beneficial for students to have at least a foundational understanding before pursuing a master’s degree in the field. That’s because programming helps data scientists to process, analyze, and generate predictions from data. Python, R, and SQL are just a few of the programming languages used to tackle specific tasks. Sifting through and analyzing large datasets is a key part of the job, so the ability to understand one or more of these languages is essential.

Online education offers an accessible way for working professionals to pursue a degree and apply that learning immediately in their career. When you decide to earn your master’s in leadership online, you can complete your coursework wherever is convenient for you. Plus, online master’s programs let you choose when in the day you attend class, providing you with the level of flexibility you need to complete your program while you continue to work full time. Walden’s MS in Leadership program is delivered through an online learning platform that connects you with expert faculty, resources, and the support you need to be successful throughout your program. Plus, when you earn your degree from Walden, you’ll be learning alongside a diverse group of students, potentially from all over the world. You’ll benefit from an enriched learning experience and be exposed to varied leadership perspectives.

How can you develop the right leadership skills?

Leadership development requires learning and practice. And while some companies offer leadership training, many of the best leaders go a step further and earn a business management degree. While there are many types of business degrees available, one of the most valuable for up-and-coming leaders is an MS in Leadership. When you earn a master’s in leadership, you can build the knowledge base and skills you need to meet the ever-evolving challenges of a complex world.

And becoming a better leader doesn’t require you to put your job on hold. Thanks to online learning, you can earn your MS degree from the convenience of your home—all you need is internet access. You choose what time to attend class, so your work and school schedules won’t conflict.

What are some of the different leadership styles?

The most common leadership styles are:

  • Transformational
Often considered the gold standard of leadership styles, transformational leadership focuses on inspiring your team members and providing them with the coaching they need to excel without a lot of supervision or micromanaging. These are particularly good qualities for a leader in any field that relies on innovation.
  • Transactional
Transactional leaders are all about incentives and disincentives. If your people perform well, you reward them (with bonuses, better offices, awards, etc.). If they perform poorly, you punish them (with the withholding of bonuses, demotions, privilege revocations, etc.). While many leaders, especially in the sales world, are transactional, this leadership style tends to be ineffective in less competitive settings.
  • Democratic
Leaders who are democratic prefer to lead by consensus. They often listen carefully to the ideas of team members and use that input when making decisions. If you have a talented team, a democratic leadership style can help ensure you don’t miss the best ideas.
What kind of courses will you take in an MS in Leadership program?

Here is a sampling of what Walden’s online master’s in leadership program has to offer:

  • Dynamic Leadership
In this introductory master’s in leadership course, you’ll closely examine your current strengths and weaknesses, values, decision-making processes, and approaches to dealing with difficult problems. • Building Organizational Culture: Leaders as Architects
Leaders must thrive within an organization’s culture. This MS in Leadership course will teach you how to recognize organizational culture, then harness it for positive change and organization-wide success. You’ll learn how to make conceptual sense of various cultural landscapes and determine how to best lead and build effective communities.
  • Communication for Leaders and Managers
Your ability to lead is closely tied to your ability to communicate. In this MS in Leadership core course, you’ll examine interpersonal and intercultural intersections and study the influence of cultural diversity on interpersonal communication. By examining theory, you’ll develop an approach to practice and hone individual strategies for communicating successfully in diverse interpersonal situations.

These are ranges of what a student can expect in terms of time and tuition cost to complete a degree. It does not include other fees, nor is it adjusted for tuition increases over time. Walden faculty has concluded that generally students who do not complete their program in eight years are unlikely to complete and only allow students to exceed that time frame when a student petitions for an extension and provides good reason for the delay and assurances that obstacles to completion can be overcome. Time is calculated using the time allowed for each quarter or unit that the student completes. Students are encouraged to work continuously during the program so as not to extend the time needed to complete the degree as work can become stale and students lose focus. Students who earn two grades of “Unsatisfactory,” who repeatedly drop a course before a quarter or unit has been completed, or are unable to complete in the eight-year time frame, should expect that they may be dismissed from the program. Walden believes that it is in the best interest of a student who is unable to complete the degree in the stated ranges to strongly consider withdrawal or obtaining a lesser degree.

Time to completion and cost are not estimates of individual experience and will vary based on individual factors applicable to the student. Factors may be programmatic or academic such as tuition and fee increases and/or the student’s transfer credits accepted by Walden; program or specialization changes; unsuccessful course completion; credit load per term; writing, research and editing skills; use of external data for their doctoral study/dissertation; individual progress in the program. Online DIT FAQ

Why do you need a Doctor of Information Technology degree?

According to Dr. Karlyn Barilovits, dean of Walden University’s College of Management and Human Potential, technical abilities are not enough to launch, and then sustain, a successful IT career at the senior level. What else is needed? Critical thinking, problem solving, and the ability to talk to technical and nontechnical colleagues alike. Online DIT degree programs prepare graduates with the strategic leadership and communication skills required to tackle everything from security breaches to advanced payroll systems.

What’s the difference between a PhD in Information Technology degree and a Doctor of Information Technology degree?

While you may hear their names used interchangeably, a PhD in Information Technology and a Doctor of Information Technology are not the same degree. A PhD in Information Technology focuses primarily on research and theory, with students choosing, and then pursuing, one specific area of research. While a DIT degree program also cultivates research skills, it is much broader, instructing students how to apply those research skills to organizations and the broad range of IT problems they may face.

Why should you earn your online DIT?

If you are already working full time in the information technology sector—or in any other career—you don’t have to drop everything to earn your DIT degree. That’s because an online university like Walden can make completing your IT degree more attainable. Instead of having to take time off from your current job to attend classes on a campus, you can complete most of your coursework from home on a flexible learning platform that lets you balance your studies with other commitments.

Are IT professionals in demand?

Yes—demand for IT professionals is strong. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the computer and information technology sectors are expected to add about 377,500 jobs annually through 2032—much faster than the national average for all occupations.1

¹Bureau of Labor Statistics | Computer and Information Technology Occupations. National long-term projections may not reflect local and/or short-term economic or job conditions, do not guarantee actual job growth, and are subject to change.

How do you choose the best university to earn your master’s in psychology online?

With many online master’s programs in psychology to choose from, it can be difficult to know which one is right for you. Start by considering whether a program lets you focus your coursework on an area of the field that captures your interest. For example, at Walden, you can choose from an array of program specializations to tailor your studies to your professional aspirations. Specializations include Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), Educational Psychology, Health Psychology, and Social Psychology. The General Psychology option allows you to gain a broad understanding of psychology and how you can apply its principles throughout your career. The Self-Designed option offers ultimate flexibility by allowing you to design a program that most closely matches your personal and professional goals.

In addition, does the online MS in Psychology program you’re looking at offer more than one way to earn your degree? Walden’s Tempo Learning® option lets you personalize the pacing of your studies. No deadlines, no set schedule.

And, if a doctoral degree is part of your plan, Walden has you covered. Depending on your specialization, you can take up to five doctoral-level courses at the master’s tuition rate and apply those credits toward a Walden doctoral program.

Lastly, if you’re a person who wants to make a positive difference for people, family, and communities, Walden’s social change mission will likely resonate with you. Our programs are designed to help students immediately apply what they learn to create lasting, meaningful change in the world around them.

What is the field of applied behavior analysis?

Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is a widely used therapy for children and adults on the autism spectrum and is practiced by behavior analysts. According to the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, annual nationwide demand for people with BCBA (Board Certified Behavior Analyst®) or Board Certified Behavior Analyst-Doctoral® (BCBA-D) certification has increased each year since 2010, with a 14% increase from 2022 to 2023. Those serving in this role work with clients to reinforce and encourage positive behaviors. Behavior analysts use evaluated and reliable interventions based upon principles of learning to improve socially important behavior of individuals. ABA therapy can help treat a variety of challenges, including problems with language and communication, attention, memory, focus, and more.

How can you become a behavior analyst?

The path to becoming a board-certified behavior analyst starts with an approved master’s degree program from an accredited university. Look for an online MS in Psychology program that offers specializations to match your career goals. Walden University’s master's in psychology online program with a specialization in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) offers a course sequence verified by the Association for Behavior Analysis International. This sequence meets the coursework requirements to sit for the Board-Certified Behavior Analyst® (BCBA®) exam. Graduates of this program who wish to pursue certification must also complete a period of supervised practical experience as defined by the BCBA®. Walden does not offer the fieldwork component required for the BCBA exam. Walden Enrollment Specialists can provide information relating to national certification exams; however, it remains the individual student’s responsibility to understand, evaluate, and comply with all requirements relating to national certification exams for the state in which he or she intends to practice.

What does an I/O psychologist do?

Industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology is the scientific study of the workplace. Psychologists apply science-based principles and methods of psychology to identify issues and solve problems in business. As an I/O psychologist, you will be prepared to address important issues in a range of settings, including organizations, colleges, and universities, as well as work as an independent consultant. You will have the ability to apply principles of psychology to problems in diverse work areas while becoming a catalyst for organizational change. With your I/O psychology degree, your areas of influence may include policy planning, employee testing and selection, employee training and development, organizational development and analysis, and assessment and improvement of worker productivity.

What will you learn when earning an MS in I/O psychology online?

Why should I choose an online program to earn my MS in Industrial and Organizational (I/O) Psychology?

When you earn your master’s degree online, you can benefit from the same knowledge and mentorship you would expect from a traditional university, in a flexible format that allows you to better balance your personal and professional obligations.
