Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

If you know how to create a budget, devise and manage a project timeline, and use customer relationship management (CRM) software, you’ve mastered some hard skills that are useful in most organizations. But to succeed in today’s fast-paced business environment, mastering soft skills is just as critical as technical know-how. Find out what soft skills are key for business success now.
You may have heard the terms “hard skills” and “soft skills,” but what do they really mean? Hard skills refer to job-specific competencies and abilities that are essential for performing specific tasks, whereas soft skills encompass the personal attributes and traits that influence your approach to work. While hard skills are usually specific to a particular career, soft skills are versatile and can be applied to just about any job.
For a chef, hard skills could include knife skills, sautéing, and food safety. For a nurse, hard skills may include patient care, medication management, and IV placement. For a teacher, the ability to use educational technology, manage a classroom, and apply knowledge of curriculum could be hard skills. But all three of these professions likely need the soft skill of teamwork as well. It’s necessary to have both hard skills and soft skills to achieve success in any professional field.
Let’s look at eight soft skills that are vital for business success.
At Walden University, we recognize that the ability to communicate effectively, work as a team, and lead with emotional intelligence are foundational to thriving in any business setting.
