Discovering the issues that impact our health requires a comprehensive, ever evolving approach that goes far beyond the individual behavioral concept. Social determinants have connections to a wide range of health conditions which are impacted by literally all aspects of life. Whether its where you live, where you work, or learn, play, or pray, these social connections have a significant role they play in determining our quality of life. This webinar will briefly look at the historical transition to the current public health concepts and discuss the expanded vision of social determinants of health today. Key concepts of this webinar will address historical perspectives, and current models and theories, but primarily emphasize current and future considerations surrounding these social determinants of health. Applying these concepts to the current pandemic will provide a backdrop for a comprehensive approach to prevention and health promotion.
Over the course of time terminology is adjusted, ideas are enhanced, and concepts are broadened to better explain the intricacies of evolving health issues across the globe. Community health was the predominant terminology years ago and reflected the evolving interest in addressing an expanded global health vision. Recently, this evolving vision has been identified as public health, to reflect the expansion in what the health of a community truly involves. This webinar will briefly look at the historical transition of terminology from community to public health and discuss the expanding vision of public health today. Key concepts of this webinar will look at the current models and theories which reflect this expanded view of public health, including population health, from a national and global perspective.
As of January 2021, California has had more than 3 million COVID-19 positive cases, of which, over 1 million of those cases tested positive in Los Angeles County. Of the 3 million positive cases, over 34,000 resulted in death in the state, of which over 14,000 were in Los Angeles County. Of the Los Angeles County numbers, 2.5% of cases were in children under 5, nearly 5% in children between 5-11 years old, 29 % in adolescents between 12-18 years old, 34% in those between 30-49 years of age, 19 % of those between 50-64 years old, and 11% in those 65 and above. The numbers indicate that those currently most impacted by COVID-19 are those of child bearing and family planning age and those who support families the most (such as grandparents and extended family.)
Various challenges such as lack of basic essentials (food, housing, job,) limited well child visit opportunities, closures in community resources/referrals, decrease in immunization rates and increase in child abuse and domestic violence are all disparities of this pandemic. However, clients enrolled in home visiting services show less decreases in all noted variables above.
Grant writing takes skill, practice, attention to detail, and lots of patience. However, without establishing the need for the project based on data, or linking appropriate goals and SMART objectives, grant writers are sure to be unsuccessful in their attempt to secure funding. This presentation will explore the needs statement as the most important part of the grant application - the essence and core of the grant appeal. This presentation will also explore the goals and objectives that accompany the needs statement, and highlight the importance of demonstrating to prospective funders that the applicant has determined specific, measurable steps that will be taken to ensure goals can be met and the project can be successful. With these key elements in place, grant writers will be better poised to balance the art and science of convincing funders of the merit of their project.
