Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

Students exploring graduate technology degrees often compare two distinct paths: an MS in Data Science and an MS in Information Technology. While both draw on computer science and information systems, they emphasize different areas of study. An MS in Data Science centers on working with information through data analytics, machine learning, and business intelligence, while an MS in Information Technology focuses on the systems, software, and infrastructure organizations rely on every day.
For prospective students, the question is less about whether both fields are valuable and more about which area of study feels like a better match. Looking at the two programs side by side can make it easier to see how their coursework, subject matter, and academic focus differ.
A data science master’s program centers on how data is collected, analyzed, and interpreted. It combines elements of computer science, statistics, and data analytics to help students work with large and complex datasets.
Students in an MS in Data Science online degree program may study topics such as:
This area of study is often linked with career roles such as computer and information systems manager1 and statistician.2 Career options may require additional experience, training, or other factors beyond the successful completion of an online master’s in data science degree program.
An MS in Information Technology centers on the systems that support digital operations. Rather than focusing primarily on interpreting data, it examines how organizations manage software, infrastructure, and technology environments.
An online MS in Information Technology program often covers topics such as:
These subjects reflect the operational side of computing and the technologies organizations rely on every day.
Graduate study in this area is often associated with roles such as:
Career options may require additional experience, training, or other factors beyond the successful completion of an online master’s in information technology degree program.
Overall employment in computer and information technology occupations is projected to grow much faster than average from 2024 to 2034. The BLS projects about 317,700 openings per year, reflecting ongoing demand across a wide range of technology-related roles .5
Walden University offers both degree options to help you advance your education in the direction that fits your interests and goals. Walden’s MS in Data Science and MS in Information Technology degree programs give you the flexibility to pursue your degree online while continuing to work and stay engaged in your personal activities.
Beyond broad IT preparation, Walden’s MS in Information Technology degree program offers specializations in Health Informatics, Information Systems, and Software Engineering.
Walden’s MS in Data Science is designed to build applied skills in data analysis, big data, and cloud-based tools used in modern organizations. Students explore widely used platforms such as IBM and AWS while developing practical experience with digital methods used to address real-world challenges.
