Northgate School – A Virtual Interactive Simulation

Image of virtual school.

As a Walden MSED Special Education candidate, you will have access to The Northgate School, an interactive multimedia simulation in which you will follow the case load of a fictional special education teacher, Mr. Gearing, throughout your program. You will have a chance to apply what you learn in a virtual environment and learn to resolve true-to-life challenges you will face in your career as a special education professional.

In course assignments and discussions throughout your program, you will explore authentic scenarios in The Northgate School to:

  • Delve into the roles, responsibilities, and ongoing challenges in K-12 Special Education
  • Hear perspectives from students, family members, and school and community stakeholders.
  • Propose solutions and apply best practices to complex issues facing Special Education professionals

Try it out for yourself. Take a tour of some of the features of The Northgate School.

In the virtual classroom, click on the highlighted student hotspots to explore various simulated challenges, and follow the prompts for each one. Some will open videos, and others will open a new tab in your browser. Available scenarios include:

  • A Matter of Principal: Observe the special educator reviewing the IEP of a new student, Charisse Gavde. How might you, as the special educator, use the information to support Charisse’s transition to The Northgate School?
  • Parent Involvement: Listen to a conversation between the special educator, a general educator, and Charisse’s father discuss her technology needs. Consider how, as the special educator, you would be an advocate for Charisse and her needs.

  • Special Education Evaluation Report: Analyze the information in Mateo Garcia’s evaluation report to determine the most supportive evidence-based assessment tools to monitor his progress.

  • Minor Student Behavior: Think about the tools and evidence-based practices you might suggest to general education teachers to monitor a student behavior in their classroom.
