Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

More Americans than ever are choosing not to have children. A Pew Research Center survey found that nearly half of U.S. adults under 50 without kids say they’re unlikely ever to become parents.1 For some, it’s a financial choice; for others, it’s about wanting to focus on career and personal goals. But for the majority, the reason is straightforward: They just don’t want to.1
These insights come from “The Experiences of U.S. Adults Who Don’t Have Children,” a Pew study that surveyed 2,542 adults 50 and older without children and 770 adults 18–49 who don’t have children and don’t plan to.1
Their responses shed light on how people experience life without children. They also preview a changing demographic landscape that public health professionals, policymakers, and other community stakeholders are likely to study over time.
Here’s a closer look at what survey participants cited as some of the trade-offs and benefits of not having kids:
