Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

PhD completion program students must have documentation of all-but-dissertation (ABD) candidacy and have left their previous institution in good standing.
Students must submit an official transcript from their previous institution that indicates completion of all requirements but a dissertation with a GPA of 3.0 to 4.0 and confirmation that the student left their previous institution in good standing.
An Enrollment Specialist will help you enroll in the ABD completion program.
Our Preparing for Capstone course helps reorient students with doctoral-level academics and pairs them with a faculty advisor for guidance and support. Advisors may also identify up to two other courses that may be useful for students to complete before their dissertation.
With courses dedicated to your dissertation, develop a research proposal, conduct your own original research, and write a comprehensive dissertation to be defended in front of a doctoral committee. An all-but-dissertation (ABD) student has completed all required coursework and exams for their PhD, but has yet to finish their dissertation and have it accepted by an institution. Our PhD completion program is designed to help these students finish their dissertation and earn their degree.
Most PhD programs require the completion of a dissertation. Some doctoral programs—such as professional doctorates—may have an alternative project or capstone requirement rather than a dissertation.
Earning a PhD is one of the highest academic achievements a person can attain. Completing a dissertation demonstrates that you can create new knowledge that advances the field in a meaningful way.
