Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

A Doctor of Education (EdD) is a terminal doctoral degree designed for education professionals who want to apply research and theory to real-world practice. While a PhD in Education focuses on academic research and theory development, an EdD prepares educators to apply leadership skills to implement evidence-based solutions in schools, districts, universities, and educational organizations.
Whether you’re a K–12 educator, administrator, or education professional, an EdD program can help you build advanced leadership skills. The degree gives you the credentials and expertise to drive meaningful change in your field.
In this short article, we’ll explore what an EdD is, the differences between an EdD and PhD in Education and the benefits of earning an EdD so you can determine if becoming a Doctor of Education is right for you.
An EdD is a doctoral degree in education that focuses on practical application rather than pure research. The degree program is designed for working professionals who want to advance their education while continuing to work in the field.
Unlike a PhD in Education program, which emphasizes theories and academic scholarship on how people learn, an EdD program focuses on how to best put those theories into practice. EdD programs prepare you to become a practitioner-scholar who can bridge the gap between research and real-world educational challenges.
The curriculum typically includes coursework in educational leadership, policy analysis, organizational change, program evaluation, and applied research methods. You'll learn to use data and evidence to make informed decisions that help improve educational outcomes.
Besides giving your resume an added boost—and the professional respect that comes with adding “Dr.” before your name—the benefits of earning an EdD are many.
An EdD positions you with the advanced skills for senior leadership roles in educational institutions. Graduates may pursue positions such as school principals, district superintendents, college deans, and program directors.
Earning this degree demonstrates your commitment to the field and your capability to lead complex educational initiatives.
A PhD in Education focuses primarily on theoretical research, while an EdD emphasizes practical application. You'll gain expertise in areas such as:
These skills enable you to make immediate, positive changes in your educational setting. From enhanced knowledge of in-classroom learning techniques to policy writing and research, those with an EdD have the knowledge and training to make differences within the profession.
The skills you develop in an EdD program transfer across educational settings. Whether you work in K–12 schools, higher education, corporate training, or nonprofit organizations, your doctoral-level expertise enables you to create positive change and drive educational innovation.
Many EdD programs, including Walden's delivered in an online format, are designed for working professionals. This means you can continue your current role while earning your degree, immediately applying what you learn to your work.
Educators who earn an EdD can explore a multitude of education career paths beyond the classroom, including:1
An EdD can prepare you to apply your skills to influence educational practices, develop policy, lead organizations, and train the next generation of educators. If you’re ready to change your world and the world of others, you’re ready to pursue your EdD.
