Courses
In the EdD Early Childhood Education specialization, you’ll build skills and progress toward your final capstone project in every course.
Disclaimers: Walden students have up to 8 years to complete their doctoral program unless they petition for an extension.
In general, students are continuously registered in the dissertation/doctoral study course until they complete their capstone project and it is approved. This usually takes longer than the minimum required terms in the dissertation/doctoral study course shell.
To complete a doctoral dissertation, students must obtain the academic approval of several independent evaluators including their committee, the University Research Reviewer, and the Institutional Review Board; pass the Form and Style Review; gain approval at the oral defense stage; and gain final approval by the Chief Academic Officer. Students must also publish their dissertation on ProQuest before their degree is conferred. Learn more about the dissertation process in the Dissertation Guidebook.

Public safety is constantly evolving, with new risks, technologies, and community needs influencing the work of today’s leaders. In response, public safety professionals across the field are turning to advanced study as a way to expand their expertise and engage more deeply with the complexities of leadership.
Walden University’s new Doctor of Public Safety and Leadership program is designed for experienced individuals in fields like law enforcement, criminal justice, emergency management, and public administration who want skills they can use to address complex public safety challenges and lead at the highest levels.
Here are a few of the key features of Walden’s innovative Doctor of Public Safety and Leadership program:
Opportunities in public safety leadership span a wide range of settings. Police departments, fire services, emergency management offices, and correctional institutions all rely on capable leaders to set strategy, manage resources, and ensure communities are protected when it matters most.
Beyond the agency level, public safety leadership can extend into policy and strategy. Public safety professionals may advise lawmakers, serve on legislative committees, or design frameworks for crisis response and homeland security. These roles often influence decisions that ripple across entire regions or even nations.
Education and training offer other avenues for leadership. Many experienced professionals move into roles at academies, professional associations, or national programs, helping to prepare the next generation of officers, firefighters, and emergency managers.
Leadership also reaches beyond government. Nonprofits, research institutes, and industries such as healthcare, utilities, and corporate security all look to public safety leaders for guidance. In these areas, the focus is often on collaboration—connecting across sectors to strengthen resilience and maintain continuity during times of crisis.
So, where can a doctorate in public safety and leadership take you? Walden’s public safety and leadership degree may be just the transformative educational journey you’ve been looking for.
