Unlock potential with a teaching career in special education.

If you’re someone who feels called to make a difference, earning a special education degree can help you turn that passion into purpose. Special education professionals play a powerful role in helping students with diverse learning needs discover their strengths, gain confidence, and achieve their goals.

Here are three meaningful ways you can make an impact as a future special educator:

  1. Providing Personalized Learning and Support That Matters
Every student learns differently, and that’s where the heart of special education lies. Instead of expecting all learners to fit the same mold, special education teachers adapt instruction to meet each child where they are and help them move forward at their own pace.

    In practice, that means:

    • Individualized Education Programs (IEPs): These personalized plans identify each student’s learning goals and outline the support they need to reach them. Collaborating with families and colleagues ensures that every part of a student’s education works together toward success.1
    • Differentiated Instruction: From hands-on activities to visual learning tools, special educators use creative strategies to make lessons accessible and engaging for all learners.
    • Encouraging Growth: With the training from an online special education degree, you’ll learn how to turn learning challenges into breakthroughs that help students feel seen, capable, and proud of their progress.

  2. Creating Inclusive Classrooms Where Every Student Belongs
A sense of belonging changes everything. Inclusive classrooms give all students the opportunity to learn, connect, and contribute, no matter their abilities or challenges.

Special education professionals help build that community by:

    • Promoting Empathy and Understanding: Teaching students about diversity and inclusion fosters compassion and respect among peers.
    • Collaborating With General Education Teachers: Through co-teaching, special educators ensure that students with disabilities receive the support they need while staying engaged in the broader classroom experience.2

    • Building a Positive Environment: By modeling patience, encouragement, and acceptance, special educators create spaces where students feel safe to take risks, try new things, and celebrate growth.

When you earn your special education degree online, you’ll gain tools you can use to help every student feel valued—and every classroom feel like a place where they belong.

  3. Advocating for Students and Their Success
Being a special education professional means being a voice for students inside and outside the classroom. Advocacy is at the heart of this profession, ensuring that every learner has equal access to the resources and opportunities they deserve.

This advocacy takes many forms and includes:2

    • Partnering With Families: Special educators work closely with parents and caregivers, building strong relationships and sharing strategies to support learning at home.
    • Championing Equity: Teachers often collaborate with school leaders to promote fair policies and inclusive practices that benefit all students.
    • Inspiring Systemic Change: Many special education professionals extend their advocacy to the community, helping to shape the future of education and creating more inclusive learning environments everywhere.

Every time you advocate for a student, you help shift what’s possible for them, and for the generations that follow. Earning a BS in Special Education can give you tools and knowledge you can use to help change student trajectories.

Licensure
Walden is approved by the Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) to offer a program leading to a Minnesota Tier 3 license in Special Education: Academic Behavioral Strategist. Candidates seeking licensure in Minnesota are responsible for completing all Minnesota requirements beyond Walden’s state-approved program. The Minnesota Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB) is solely responsible for reviewing applications and issuing licenses.

Individuals interested in licensure in states other than Minnesota may qualify by virtue of completing a state-approved educator preparation program; however, individuals must review their state’s regulations to ensure the program meets all requirements, paying particular attention to any requirements specific to out-of-state program completers. Individuals who reside in certain states may be ineligible to enroll in this program. Walden Enrollment Specialists can provide guidance on licensure questions; however, it remains the individual’s responsibility to understand and comply with all state licensure requirements. Walden makes no representation or guarantee that completion of Walden coursework or programs will permit an individual to obtain state licensure.

Walden University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (www.hlcommission.org), an institutional accreditation agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
