New Survey Reports Spike in Undergraduate AnxietyAnxiety is up on college campuses—and so is the need for those with a master’s in clinical mental health counseling.

If you’re interested in becoming a counselor, it’s a great time to pursue the profession—and a master’s degree from a clinical mental health counseling graduate program will help get you there.

According to a recent annual survey of college and university counseling center directors, the need for school counselors—many of whom hold an online master’s in clinical mental health counseling—continues to grow as more and more undergraduates seek counseling for anxiety and depression.

Whether you’re investigating on-campus or online counseling degrees, including an online master’s in clinical mental health counseling, this upswing in the need for counseling translates into an increased demand for counselors with the right credentials.

More counselors needed to support students with anxiety

The survey, conducted by the Association for University and College Counseling Center Directors (AUCCCD), reports that 46% of students sought counseling for anxiety during the 2012–2013 academic year—a record high, which was up 5% from the previous year—with 39% seeking help for depression, followed by 35% for relationship issues.

Many counseling centers are slowly getting back on their feet after post-recession budget declines, with over half (59%) reporting slight budget increases. These increases could translate into a brighter job forecast for those with a degree from a clinical mental health counseling graduate program, as 32% of centers report adding staff positions.

These facts, combined with the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ prediction for 19% employment growth for school and career counselors by 2020, indicate a bright future for those with an online counseling degree.
