Jasmine Opusunju

Dr. Opusunju received her DrPH in Health Promotion and Behavioral Sciences from the University of Texas School of Public Health. She is a Contributing Faculty member in the MS in Health Education and Promotion program at Walden University and teaches Applied Research. Dr. Opusunju is also the Executive Director for CAN DO Houston, a community-based organization focused on advancing healthy lifestyles through community-driven solutions with a particular history around facilitating grassroots policy and environmental changes to promote access to active living and healthy eating. She has over 15 years of experience in grassroots community engagement, capacity building, and leadership and advocacy training to promote environmental changes essential for facilitating the adoption and maintenance of healthy lifestyles.

Dr. Opusunju has spent the past 15+ years working in health promotion research centered around community based participatory research, perceptions and health behavior, and innovative changes to the built environment and policies that facilitate active living and healthy eating in order to advance health equity. She has also been engaged in research related to body image, patient navigation, and colorectal cancer screening. Dr. Opusunju is a Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and Certified in Public Health (CPH). She actively served on the Board of the Texas Society for Public Health Education (TSOPHE) in various positions (President, Past President, President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and Member-at-Large) for 10 years and is the current Past President. She has been the chair of the membership and advocacy committees while also playing an active role on the continuing education, professional development, and program planning committees. Across her 15+ years in academia, Dr. Opusunju has taught courses in Research Methods, Foundations of Public Health, Introduction to Epidemiology, Social and Behavioral Aspects of Health, Nutrition and Environment, Behavior Change Theory, Anatomy & Physiology, Contemporary Health Issues, Program Planning and Evaluation, Global Health, Administration and Leadership in Public Health, and Cultural Aspects of Health.
