Dr. Mercer received her Masters in Psychological Services in 1984, her PhD in Professional Psychology in 1996, and her postdoctoral Masters in Clinical Psychopharmacology in 2012. She is a Licensed Psychologist. She was a clinical researcher on the Faculty of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania from 1990 until 2003, and was involved in research on addiction, psychotherapy, prevention, and public health. In 2003, a move led her to western Nebraska, where she is a clinical psychologist in an outpatient practice, was the Clinical Coordinator of the Behavioral Health Unit, and consults on the Acute Rehabilitation Unit and throughout the hospital. She has taught on many topics in psychology and has over 30 publications.
