Dr. Matthews has a doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Penn State University and master’s degrees in Counseling and in Women’s Studies from Shippensburg University and George Washington University respectively. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor in PA. Dr. Matthews worked in community action and drug and alcohol programs prior to her work in higher education, working primarily with high-risk youth. She was actively involved with the implementation of student assistance programs in PA. Dr. Matthews has taught in graduate Counseling and Counseling Psychology programs at several major universities. She has conducted research and published in the area of affirmative counseling with lesbian, gay, and bisexual populations. She also does scholarship in the areas of addiction and prevention. She has presented regularly at the national conferences of the American Counseling Association, American Psychological Association, and Association for Women in Psychology. She has served on the editorial boards of Journal of Counseling and Development, Journal of Multicultural Counseling and Development, Journal for Specialists in Group Work, and Journal of LGBT Issues in Counseling, for which she was the associate editor from 2010-2013. She has served as the secretary, treasurer, and chair of the American Counseling Association North Atlantic Region, the President of the PA Counseling Association, Chair of the American Psychological Association Committee on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Concerns, and Chair of Division 44 of the American Psychological Association, Society for the Psychological Study of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues. Dr. Matthews is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Pennsylvania.
