Phi Alpha was established in 1962 to “provide a closer bond among students of social work and promote humanitarian goals and ideas.” Phi Alpha fosters high standards of education for social workers and extends membership to social work students who have attained excellence in scholarship and achievement in social work. Presently, there are more than 400 chapters in schools across the globe, including Walden University’s Tau Sigma Chapter for graduate-level social work students. As Phi Alpha members, students are provided with many opportunities to participate in humanitarian activities and service projects, network with other professionals, and explore future career choices.
To be considered for membership and participate in the quarterly induction ceremony, social work students must meet the following criteria:
The National Organization for Human Services Honor Society, Tau Upsilon Alpha (TUA), recognizes Walden students in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences who demonstrate integrity, academic excellence, and dedication to empowering people through education and service. The purpose of TUA is to honor academic excellence; foster lifelong learning, leadership, and development; and promote excellence in service to humanity.
The Alpha Chi chapter of Tau Upsilon Alpha was established in 2013 by organizer and student president, Dr. Irena Glover. Under the current 2017 leadership of Dr. Avon Hart-Johnson, faculty advisor; Dr. Elaine M. Barclay, chapter president; Rev. Demetra Hutchinson, vice president; Tamika Payne, treasurer; and Jennifer VanBuren, secretary; with support from Dr. William Barkley, program director of Human Services, Alpha Chi seeks to expand and support the professional growth and development of Walden human services students.
