Dr. Kenneth Stephens ’04, a PhD in Human Services graduate, was recently promoted to the chair of the online and evening human services programs at Southeastern University in Lakeland, Fla. He has worked at the university, where he also serves as an assistant professor, since 2006.

Jack S. Monell ’05, a PhD in Human Services graduate, accepted a position as assistant professor of justice studies at Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina.

September 2010

November 2008

Dr. Gregory E. Sumner ’06, who earned a PhD in Human Services with a specialization in Criminal Justice, was accepted into the Leadership Georgia class of 2009. Leadership Georgia is a leadership training program for young business and civic leaders.

Theresa A. Beeton ’06, who earned a PhD in Human Services with a specialization in Clinical Social Work, was awarded the Harville Hendrix award for clinical excellence by Imago Relationships International at their 2008 conference held in Portland, Ore., in November 2008. Dr. Beeton was recognized for coordinating and designing research related to Imago Relationship Therapy. During this conference, Dr. Beeton presented the results of her most recent study concerning spatial brain changes and the use of Imago Therapy.

May 2008

Dr. Gregory E. Sumner ’06, who earned a PhD in Human Services with a specialization in Criminal Justice, published his dissertation research as an article, “Community Policing: A Critical Analysis of a Small Police Department,” in the journal, Professional Issues in Criminal Justice. Dr. Sumner is the founder and president of Professional Screening and Information, a pre-employment screening company that received the Small Business of the Year Award from the Greater Rome [Georgia] Chamber of Commerce.

March 2008

Dr. Steven Gilbert ’06, who earned a PhD in Human Services with a specialization in Criminal Justice, provides an annual $500 award through the Gilbert Forensic Science Scholarship for criminal justice or criminal investigations to students at the State University of New York, Canton. Dr. Gilbert also founded the Omega Upsilon chapter of the Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Honor Society.

November 2007

Dr. Jonathan S. Gray ’07, who earned a PhD in Human Services with a specialization in Counseling, is developing a nonprofit organization in Israel that will work with schools and communities to develop tailor-made programs for at-risk youth that will enhance their leadership talents. The mission of the organization will be to reduce violence by redirecting negative energy into positive action. Dr. Gray’s dissertation focused on adolescents’ perceptions of school and community violence in Northern Israel.

September 2007

Dr. Stephen Ellsworth ’02, who earned a PhD in Human Services with a specialization in Criminal Justice, has recorded a song and a video entitled “Stand Forever Tall,” dedicated to a young soldier wounded in Afghanistan.

Dr. Janet Cunningham ’07, who earned a PhD in Human Services, recently traveled to Turkey to conduct regression therapy training courses.

July 2007

Dr. Barbra A. Hughes ’99, who earned a PhD in Human Services, received a 2007 Power of Prevention Award from the North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund for her work in the prevention of obesity.
