Businessman writes on a whiteboard while his team watches. Can you imagine a world without leaders? It’s nearly impossible, as leaders exist in every field of human endeavor, helping set goals and guide others forward. This is as true in the world of business as it is anywhere else, especially given the way so many organizations are structured with multiple levels of managers and executives. But even in a leadership-rich field like business, it still takes a lot to be a good leader.

First of all, you need the drive. Without a passion to lead, you’re likely to struggle in a leadership role. But even if you have the drive, you’re not guaranteed of success. That’s because organizational leadership takes a lot of skill. The skills you need include the ability to:

  • Apply the right leadership techniques to the right situations.
  • Motivate others to perform their best.
  • Foster innovation.
  • Identify opportunities and threats in the marketplace.
  • Manage a multicultural and/or multi-location workforce.
  • Build and maintain a strong organizational culture in sync with organizational goals.
  • Manage big changes in organizational structure and/or focus.
  • Manage through crisis.
  • Resolve ethical issues and dilemmas.
  • Conduct research.

While you might not need every skill in every situation, you will certainly need many different skills to lead your business successfully. Which is why, at Walden University, we offer a Doctor of Business Administration with the option to specialize in leadership. Learning to lead can be the key in advancing your career, as Walden DBA graduate Jason Newcomer learned.

A major in the U.S. Air Force, Dr. Newcomer said in an interview, “As an officer, leadership is the most important part of my job. The focus of my doctoral study was on leadership development and it allowed me to couple the benefits of aiding my organization with the benefits of developing my own understanding of leadership concepts.” Earning a DBA helped Dr. Newcomer not only advance his Air Force career but also gain the leadership skills he needs for a post-military career. The degree was a great choice for him, and it can be a great choice for you, as well.
