The Commitment to Social Change scholarship is available for new students who demonstrate the capacity to effect positive social change. At Walden University, we believe that knowledge is most worthy when it is put to use in the interest of the greater good. For programs that do not have start dates in the month the award begins, the award will apply to the next available term.

Eligibility

Applicants must:

  • Have been admitted to and accepted their offer of admission to their program of interest within seven months prior to the deadline for the scholarship for which they are applying. (Please note that this refers to admission to the university and acceptance of the offer of admission, not the applicant’s course start date.)
    • Students eligible for the April 1 deadline will have been admitted and have accepted their offer of admission between September 1 and April 1.
    • Students eligible for the October 1 deadline will have been admitted and have accepted their offer of admission between March 1 and October 1.
  • Start their program before or in the month their award disbursement begins.
    • Award disbursement for recipients from the April 1 deadline will begin in June.
    • Award disbursement for recipients from the October 1 deadline will begin in December.
    • For programs that do not have start dates in the month of the award, scholarship recipients must start at the next available start date.
  • Not ever have withdrawn from Walden University.
  • Not have received another merit-based Walden scholarship for the type of degree they are pursuing (i.e., master’s or doctoral degree).
  • Apply only one time for this scholarship.

Criteria

All master’s and doctoral-level applicants must demonstrate the capacity to effect positive social change. In addition, doctoral applicants also must demonstrate the capacity to conduct and succeed at research.

Eligible master’s applicants will be considered for the $2,500 scholarship. Eligible doctoral applicants will be considered for both the $5,000 and $25,000 scholarships; however, to be considered for the $25,000 scholarship, doctoral applicants must show exemplary evidence of research publications and previously conducted research.

Disbursement

Doctoral Scholarship ($25,000)

This scholarship, which provides tuition remission in the total amount of $25,000, is disbursed in the amount of $4,000 per term, with any balance rolling into additional terms. The university must be in receipt of all of the applicant’s official documentation for the scholarship funds to be disbursed. Students who take a leave of absence for an entire term forfeit the scholarship amount for that term; students may not add forfeited scholarship funds to another term. Receipt of this scholarship may reduce students’ loan eligibility and lessen their overall debt load.

Doctoral Scholarship ($5,000)

This scholarship, which provides tuition remission in the total amount of $5,000, is disbursed evenly across two terms, with any remaining balance rolling into additional terms. The university must be in receipt of all of the applicant’s official documentation for the scholarship funds to be disbursed. Students who take a leave of absence for an entire term forfeit the scholarship amount for that term; students may not add forfeited scholarship funds to another term. Receipt of this scholarship may reduce students’ loan eligibility and lessen their overall debt load.

Master’s Scholarship ($2,500)

This scholarship, which provides tuition remission in the total amount of $2,500, is disbursed evenly across two terms, with any remaining balance rolling into additional terms. The university must be in receipt of all of the applicant’s official documentation for the scholarship funds to be disbursed. Students who take a leave of absence for an entire term forfeit the scholarship amount for that term; students may not add forfeited scholarship funds to another term. Receipt of this scholarship may reduce students’ loan eligibility and lessen their overall debt load.
