Background

Dr. Tirrito is a distinguished professor emerita in the College of Social Work at the University of South Carolina. She received the University of South Carolina’s highest award, the USC Educational Foundation Award for Research, for her research in gerontology and facilitated geriatric online workshops under a grant from the Institute for Geriatric Social Work. Prior to the University of South Carolina, she was a professor at Long Island University where she taught in the Gerontology Certificate Program. Dr. Tirrito was a visiting professor at Australian Catholic University and lectured at Massey University in New Zealand. She lectures on aging issues in Seoul, Korea, and serves as the editor of the University of South Carolina’s Arete: Journal of the College of Social Work. She has been designated as “Expert Teacher” by the Council on Social Work Education for The John Hartford Foundation.

In addition to presenting at more than 100 conferences, Dr. Tirrito has written five books and published articles focused on aging issues. She is a former president of The National Academic and Professional Honor Society in Gerontology. Dr. Tirrito has held several administrative positions in social agencies and nursing homes and directed projects related to aging programs in England, Scotland, France, Russia, and Sweden.
