Dr. Hagens has worked in a variety of interdisciplinary teaching and research institutions including Governors State University, the Union Institute & University, and Goddard College. She brings a communications and creative thinking/problem-solving orientation to issues of community organization, sustainability, and environmental justice planning. She collaborated with industrial designer William Becker, of the University of Illinois, Chicago, to create a variety of renewable energy products and policies that would support food security, and was awarded a National Science Foundation Public Service Community Science Residency to explore and plan for affordable renewable energy and housing in low-income communities in Illinois.
