Background

Dr. Hawthorne-Burdine began practicing as a nurse in 1974 and has clinical experience in the areas of neonatal intensive care, coronary intensive care, open-heart recovery, preoperative and postoperative care, emergency room nursing, and general pediatrics. Dr. Hawthorne uses a cross-sectional approach with the comparative-correlational design to investigate the relationship of sexual-reproductive hormones and variant alleles within the CYP3A4 family of genes in females, ages 14 to 21 years, with sickle cell disease. Since 1977, she has taught traditional classroom courses, televised courses, online courses, and subjects outside of nursing that included sociology and psychology. She is an active member of several nursing organizations and frequently speaks at professional meetings and conferences. In May 2008, she joined Walden as an adjunct faculty member in the School of Nursing. She teaches a graduate-level nursing research course to students in the MSN program.
