Dr. Cortner teaches public health informatics and serves as a mentor for Walden doctoral students. She is a consultant and researcher in preventive health strategies, a registered dietitian (RD), and a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel, where she served in the Biomedical Sciences Corps and spent 12 years as a director at various Air Force medical centers. Cortner has worked as a researcher in several areas, including nutrition, preventive health, and helping seniors learn how to find and download health information from the Internet. Her Air Force landmark study on healthy eating was published in Applied & Preventive Psychology (Fiedler, Cortner, Ktenidis, and Balch, 1999).
