Detrina Crawley ’11, an M.S. in Psychology graduate and M.S. in Mental Health Counseling student, recently received the 2012 Robert E. Shepherd Jr. Professional Development Scholarship from the Virginia Juvenile Justice Association in recognition of her continued pursuit of education. Crawley is a transitional parole officer for the Thirteenth District Court Service Unit in Richmond.

Xiomara A. Sosa, an M.S. in Mental Health Counseling student and founder of The Get-Right! Organization, announced a partnership with NEW LATINA – THE Online Destination for Latinas Going Places in October. Together, they will launch the National Hispanic Mental Health Professionals Advocacy Network to create an active community of Hispanic mental health professionals by improving culturally relevant communication.

Charles Guthrie, an M.S. in Mental Health Counseling student, was recently named president-elect of the Maryland Association for Counseling and Development (MACD), a state branch of the American Counseling Association (ACA). He became an active member and volunteer for MACD in the past year, offering his time and professional experience during the organization’s activities and events.

Bradley R. Anders, a Ph.D. in Human Services student and a patrol officer with the Lee’s Summit Police Department, recently organized a new unit to address crime and quality of life from a community-oriented policing perspective in the Kansas City, Mo., metro area. The unit is tasked with making contacts within the community and fostering positive relationships.

Julie Carvalho, a Ph.D. in Human Services student, presented a talk about pro-social values in curriculum at the Eastern Community College Social Science Association’s 38th annual conference, “The Great Renewal: Rebuilding Our Nation, Visions and Challenges” on March 30. Carvalho is an adjunct professor at Northern Virginia Community College in Loudoun, where she teaches psychology.

Lee L. Lapham, an M.S. in Mental Health Counseling student, was awarded the 2011 National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) Foundation Rural Scholarship in March. The scholarship recognizes counseling students who commit to practicing in rural areas upon graduation. Lapham will act as an advocate in her hometown of Martin, Mich., by developing community-based obesity projects and participating in a local anti-bullying campaign in addition to serving as a counselor.

Walden awarded a Commitment to Social Change Scholarship to incoming M.S. in Mental Health Counseling student Onika Henry in December 2011. She aims to facilitate social change in Trinidad and Tobago at varying levels of society through drama therapy and psychodrama, with an emphasis on issues related to HIV/AIDS, including prevention, stigma, and discrimination and gender issues.

Jacqueline Ward, an M.S. in Mental Health Counseling student, was selected as one of 15 honorable mention winners for her entry in the American Counseling Association (ACA) Foundation’s Gerald and Marianne Corey 2011 Graduate Student Essay Competition. Ward was invited to the ACA conference, where the chairman announced the honor during the award ceremony.
